Background & History

The San Diego Renegades ASA-USA Junior Olympic Fast Pitch Softball teams are dedicated to
developing youths into future Olympic and College Stars. The Renegades are members of the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) the governing body for USA Softball as well as the Canadian International World Series (Canada Cup) guidelines . We compete in Southern California ASA which traditionally has dominated every age group of softball at the National level. We believe that youth sports help promote team unity, character building, physical fitness and self-esteem in the players. Athletics prepare the players for the future and help develop skills to be used further in life. It has also been proven in various studies that female athletes perform better in academics and are less likely to have personal problems then the non-athletes. The current players on our teams are made up of players from San Diego County, Orange County, and Riverside County areas, deriving from all ethnic and minority groups. The San Diego Renegades operate as a non-profit organization and are funded solely by fund raisers, player fees, sponsors, and advertisers. We are based out of Rancho Peñasquitos, North County Inland, in San Diego, California,  currently there are teams at  10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, and 18UGold levels. The San Diego Renegades have already proven themselves as San Diego’s premier girls travel organization.  Each of the San Diego Renegades team will play over 100 games a year.  Weekly, teams will play in Orange, Los Angeles and Riverside Counties in various friendlies and in double elimination tournaments.

History

The organization was founded in 1996 when several
of the Rancho Peñasquitos Recreation All Stars began playing as a travel
team.  Rancho Peñasquitos recreation teams have been very successful
over the years and many of the top players were leaving for local Travel
teams.  In order to provide these girls with a travel program closer
to home, the San Diego Renegades were
formed. Kelly Petersen is credited for coming up with the
“Renegades” name.

In that first fall season in 1996; the Renegades finished
second in the 14U North County Winter Ball Association. The Renegades then began their first real year in Travel ball
in 1997. In 1997, two 12U teams and a 16U team joined the 14U&#039s and the San Diego Renegades became a
complete organization. Since that time, San Diego Renegades teams have won over 30 tournaments and 450 games between them. In
1997 two teams attended ASA Nationals and one team attended the TPS Triple
Crown Tournament.
